Philologist | Linguistic Consultant | audiovisual translator
RICCARDO DE MATTEIS
MIS RAÍCES
I am Italian-German and grew up in a bilingual and multicultural environment. I was born in Germany, near Cologne, in a small town called Stommeln. There I grew up in a deeply Italian house, with parents from Puglia, immersed in a markedly German town. That mix allowed me to enjoy rigorous German education and, at the same time, temperament and Italian cuisine.
MI MOTIVACIÓN
Since I was a child I discovered that each culture is its own universe, full of nuances and that language is the key to entering it. Depending on the context and the language, my personality changed, and I learned to get the best out of each world. That experience led me to create my own cultural space: what is known as the Third Space Culture. Since then I learned that my life would be linked to languages, to discover new ways of thinking and to live life from different perspectives.
The cinema not only entertained me, it taught me to feel, to imagine and to connect with people from any corner of the planet. That’s why I knew I wanted to get into the world of cinema and get into some globally successful production!
Because Translating audiovisuals is not just moving words… It is transmitting emotions, making a laugh, a tear or a sigh cross borders and reach the viewer intact.

ACTUALMENTE
Today I live in Spain, in my beloved Badajoz, the city that adopted me and offered me what I was looking for: a corner of the world that I can call home.
I am lucky to be able to collaborate on projects and productions for films and streaming platforms, and to be a member of the Avü E.V. (Audiovisuelle Übersetzer*Innen), Professional Association of Audiovisual Translators and Translators, both self-employed and German employees and I continue with the same passion that prompted me from the beginning:
Bring stories to life and bring them closer to audiences of different cultures. My audiovisual translation business is not just a job, it’s my way of connecting worlds, people and emotions. It is my day to day, my way of living, my essence.
Everyone asks me: What language do you dream of? That question reflects that essence of mine: inhabiting several worlds at the same time and giving them a voice on the screen.
